Device discovery distributed over time

Greetings.

It appears to me that when using the Dispatcher service, the polling of devices is distributed across the full 5-minute polling period (rather than all at the beginning of the polling period as with the cron job polling). Is there any way to configure Discovery to be distributed across the full discovery period similar to polling? Currently I see a bunch of “device:discover” processes at the beginning of each discovery period and then no more until the next discovery period. While Discovery is running, it really hammers the CPUs hard. It would be a lot easier on the CPUs if Discovery could be distributed across the full discovery period. (To be clear, I’m referring to Discovery, not Auto-Discovery.)

You’ve mis-understood how things work. discovery and polling both work the same.

polling processes are run one after the other until they are all done. polling processes up to the number of workers can run at once.

so this has the effect that the poller worker count controls how well the polls are spread across the interval.

The same is true for discovery, if you want it to be spread out more set discovery workers to 1 or 2.

Setting a high worker count on either will cause them all to be run simultaneously. (which can be catostrophic)
